5. Tests in Competition - CompetitiveSkate

In February, the Skate Canada Board of Directors approved regulation changes relating to the competitive restructure. Please review the document posted in Members Only under Technical & Programs > Rules > “Competitive Restructure Regulation Changes (February 8)” as this provides in full detail these changes. This information has also been incorporated into the 2012 Skate Canada Rule Book.

There has been no change to how STARSkate tests can be taken in the STARSkate stream. They cannot be taken in a STARSkate category using the competition scoring system.

CompetitiveSkate athletes have been using the competition scoring system for a number of years as an option to test their competition pre-requisites.  The test requirements for the competitive competition categories have changed to be STARSkate tests so the regulation was updated to reflect the change in test pre-requisites and passing requirements. For example, an athlete wishing to compete in Novice Competitive could test a Gold Free Skate test at a Novice competition that offers testing.

New senior schedule format for the 2012 Canadian Figure Skating Championships

We are pleased to announce that Skate Canada has been able to access three consecutive hours of live CTV network television coverage on the Saturday evening of the 2012 Canadian Figure Skating Championships.  This is an amazing opportunity to showcase some of the best in our sport on prime time television across Canada.  With so many options on television, today’s audiences are drawn to “edge of your seat events” including reality TV and finals in sporting events. This trend provides a new opportunity to promote and feature our sport.  Skate Canada is excited to test a schedule format at the 2012 Canadians in Moncton that will provide TV and in person audiences with a condensed, action-packed finale on Saturday night.

There will be no change to the senior short program/short dance format from previous years.  Saturday night will become a “Night of Championship Skating” and will feature the final groups of senior women, senior pair and senior ice dance in a live television timeslot that has historically been the best in terms of viewer numbers.  The first two groups in these disciplines will compete earlier in the day on Saturday.

The same judging and technical panels will be used for all parts of the same event as usual to ensure a standard comparison basis for all performances.

For these three categories it will be an exciting short program competition to see who rises to the occasion and is rewarded with a spot in the final group (top six in women, five in ice dance and four in pair).  These skaters will earn the chance to be seen on TV by more than 750,000 viewers – a great way to grow their profile in the sporting community in general.

The senior men’s free program event will proceed in the usual manner since it is the only event to be scheduled on Sunday afternoon and will be taped and re-packaged for television later that same evening.

Ice Dance: One Hand/Arm Rotational Lift Extra Feature

October 31st, 2011

The following clarifications are regarding the program requirements for the 2011-2012 season. If you still have a concern that needs to be clarified after reviewing the document, contact the Coaching & Skating Programs Department at coaching& This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Can you clarify the new one hand/arm rotational lift extra feature? Page 13 of ISU Communication 1677 (www.isu.org, <Single & Pair Skating/Ice Dance><ISU Judging System>< Ice Dance>) states:

Only One Hand/Arm Lift is used to lift, hold and set down the lifted partner, and

the lifting partner is on one foot for at least one rotation;

and/or the lifting partner significantly changes the level of his skating legs (knees) with a continuous motion;

and/or the lifting partner’s holding arm is fully extended in front with a significant distance between partners.

What options are there to get a level 4 (option 2) on a rotational lift? Do you only have to do one of the three bullets that are listed below or are multiple bullets required? It is required to have only one of any of the three bullet points listed above to reach level 4.

This policy also applies to all other Skate Canada programs, therefore Clubs and skating schools may choose to expand the use of CSA approved hockey helmets in their club as they see necessary.  In general, anyone who lacks good control/balance when skating forward, backward and has difficulty stopping, as well as maneuvering around obstacles on the ice must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.

You are encouraged to use, and provide as a reference, the Information for Clubs, Parents and Coaches as it relates to the Helmet Use Policy which is also posted in Members Only under Clubs and Schools. This document has recently been updated and will continue to be updated as new questions and information arise.

Junior and Senior competition rules are determined by the ISU. ISU Rule 353 (2)(d) states that the tie breaker in the short dance is the total technical score. Housekeeping has been done to the Regulation 105 (2)(d) of CPC Regulations - Section A.

“If two or more skaters/couples/teams have the same result, the total technical score will break the tie in the short program and the pattern dance(s) or short dance. The program component score will break the tie in the free skate and free dance.”

7.  Free Skate Test Equivalencies

As per the decisions made at the April 1, 2011 Board of Directors meeting, the STARSkate free skate test equivalencies have been revised (effective July 1, 2011). An overview of the revision is posted in Members Only under Technical & Programs/STARSkate/STARSkate Regulation Changes – (page 12). Competitive tests taken prior to July 1, 2011 will be awarded the previous STARSkate test equivalencies as grandfathering will not be in effect for this regulation revision.
